If the Only Prayer You Said Was “Thank You”

He Made it and It Was Beautiful

I read it from The Secret but it was Johannes “Meister” Eckhart who allegedly originally said this.

If the only prayer you said in your whole life was thank you…

I do not know who Eckhart is, except that he was a German theologian, philosopher and mystic born during the 12th century who wrote such controversial articles that he was tried as a heretic by the then-pope.

But this is not about Meister Eckhart or the Secret.  This article is about certain prayers, and thank you.

Because when I read those words, I mentally recited the prayers that I have known and lovingly recited all my life: the Our Father, the Hail Mary, the Glory Be.

As the words rolled from my thoughts, I noticed that it was about praisingHoly be Your name… Full of grace… the Lord is with you… blessed are you… blessed is the fruit of your womb… Glory beand asking…  Give us today our daily bread… forgive us our sins… do not bring us to the test… deliver us from evil… pray for us sinners

But there was nothing about giving thanks.

So I recited it again in my head.  I still could not believe there was not one word of thanks or something that expressed gratefulness.

Because if the only prayer you said in your whole life was thank you…

I thought I had to do something.  From that night on, when I would pray the Rosary, I would utter thank you at the end of every prayer.  At first, I felt that it was odd, that somehow, the thank you did not fit.  But eventually, the little utterances of thank you at the end became not only appropriate but necessary.  It manifested my gratefulness for the day, for the little miracles that happened, and intensified the great hope that I have for the coming days. I even taught it to my daughter, who forgets to utter it some of the time, and laughs a mama-is-silly laugh when we pray it together, but I have a suspicion that in her mind (and heart) she understands.

If the only prayer you said in your whole life was thank you…that would suffice.

Because God is great and he deserves our thanks.  All the time, every day, in our every step.

5 Thoughts on “If the Only Prayer You Said Was “Thank You”

  1. Hello Issa!

Well i would have to agree with you. Most of the time, we are just too focused on asking what we dont have and we forget to thank him for what we already have. Thank you is just a couple of words but I know our Mighty Creator would love to hear it from us.

@Shanna Personally, I, too, love hearing it (I am tickled pink!), and I am sure, with what HE has done for us and given us (pretty much everything we have), it would be such pleasure for him too. Thanks!
