How to Be A Millionaire Without Starting a Business (and a Mention at Cosmopolitan Magazine!)

When I got the email from Kristina Monica Guerra of Cosmopolitan Magazine requesting for an interview, I was more than thrilled – I was ecstatic.

She said she got to know of me from Anton Diaz’ list of upcoming Bloggers and wanted my two cents on how one can be a millionaire without starting a business.

The question stumped me.  I am a business advocate and champion of those who dare to change their lives through the wonderful, maddening, exciting world of business.

Being a millionaire without going into business – is it even possible?

The March 2011 issue of Cosmopolitan Magazine featured some of the answers I submitted to Monica.  I was quoted alongside Francisco Colayco, author of several books, speaker, entrepreneur and mentor – what an honor!  I could not believe my eyes when I saw my name and my blog mentioned (yey!).  Thanks again, Monica.

But back to the question: Can one get to millions without getting his feet wet in the grime and grunge of business?

Yes.

There is the usual (or not-so-usual) route to get to millions – marry it, inherit it, steal it.  But here are other not-so-obvious routes:

1.      Stock Market Trading

They have a term for the stockmarket player-genius-afficionado – a chupitero.  A chupitero is not your usual long-range, 7-year, cautious trader.  A chupitero is a day trader, buying and selling stocks on the same day, watching stockmarket graphs like a hawk and waiting for small price movements that would give him his 2% profit (after commissions and taxes) for the day. For the day! Multiplied by 20 trading days, that is a 40% profit per month!  But easy it is not – to be a day trader, one would need to have a substantial investment (some say $2,000 would be a good start), a passion for learning the market, and nerves of steel – knowing when to hold on and when to throw in the towel.  Those who are greedy need not apply.

(I did not know about the chupitero until I heard about it from our financial planner and MoneyDoctors partner, Joe Ferreria, during a post-Christmas lunch we had at their house. That’s why I love mentors and urge everyone to find one – every second with them is a learning experience.  Thanks, Joe!)

2.      Innovention

Almost everything has been invented but there is always room for improvement.  Changing the purpose or redesigning something can mean a million in one’s pocket.  Take the case of the one who changed the purpose of the humble umbrella.  From a protection against rain, it was made into a decorative piece for cocktails.  Cocktails! Another person looked at a golf tee (it holds the golf ball in place) that is made of wood.  He combined dried grass, clay and soil and voila! – an innovation. Not only was the tee he invented recyclable, it saved many trees from being butchered.

So look around.  Improve something existing.  Change its purpose.  Redesign.  Innovate.  Look for that inventive step and you may be on to something.  Remember that invention + innovation = rich.  (very rich)

(Hubby is going this route and has something up his sleeve which we hope to unveil very soon.  The clue: disaster preparedness.  Please watch out for it!)
