New Year, New Life

Enjoying winter

Literally.  Because we took it a notch.  Er, notches.

Family and I – we just moved to Canada.  A country an ocean away, separated from us by 13 hours of flight time. A country of rugged beauty, incessant rains, warm winters (8 degrees is warm for them), trees with breadth longer than an arm span, quaint waterfalls and villages, deer that crosses roads at its peril, snow-capped mountains and seas in one sweep of the eye.  A country we have only begun to know.

But before I move on, please allow me to look back.

Because there are some things that I will be missing in my home country, the Philippines.

Friends, family, our friends/business partners in Rescue72 and MoneyDoctorsthe sun, my house, familiar things – like a favorite restaurant (Sonya’s), ABS-CBN, my friends/co-workers at ABS-CBN, my house help (baby’s yaya, especially when he is being incorrigible – and that is a big, sometimes true, word for little baby).

(I thought I would not miss the sun, having been at the receiving end of it during really warm summers when it would go full blast.  But cloudy skies, like what they have here this winter, do not really lift the soul.  It is good we have had too much of the sun.  Now, my husband, my children, I – we have lots in our memories to spare.)

And there are the things I would not miss.

The traffic, the heat.

Why did we do it?  Why did we leave?

We have no answer.  Except that we love adventure.  And doing this, perhaps, will be one of our family’s greatest adventures.

New year, new life, new adventure.  We are certainly – happily, giddily, with warm memories, and hope – looking forward.

Thanks, Didi. Di ba malamig ang 8 degrees? And they call it warm. Warm! Takes a lot of getting used to, or less, because i think i am liking it. And the little boy is not shivering as much. All the best too, to you, your husband and your new life together. Nauna ka nga pala sa akin to make the jump, uprooting, having a new start and all. Good luck to us and kisses! 😉
